      USE CASE –  MEDICAL TRANSPORT

64 days a year, the road gives way.
The drone takes the straight line.
      The organ arrives on time.

      CONTEXT

      Healthcare, Medical Transport.
      Réunion, Symbiose Médical

Saint-Denis to the north, Saint-Paul to the west, Saint-Pierre to the south: three major hospital hubs, a single coastal road connecting them. The Route du Littoral is closed or reduced to one lane 64 days a year, one day in five. Through cyclones, landslides or heavy swell, the link becomes unpredictable at the precise moment it needs to be reliable. The drone takes a direct aerial line, at any hour, whether the road is open or not.

      PLATFORM
      Cargo drone · Real-time GPS tracking · Temperature-controlled transport
A direct flight path versus 80 km via the Route du Littoral
Arrival time guaranteed to the minute, independent of road disruptions
Temperature and vibrations controlled throughout the entire journey

      Operational Context

Réunion concentrates its surgical capacity across three sites: the Félix Guyon University Hospital in Saint-Denis (600 beds, the largest hospital in the Indian Ocean), the CHU Sud in Saint-Pierre and the CHOR in Saint-Paul, opened in 2019. Between these facilities, the inter-hospital transport of organs and critical samples relies on a coastal road that is regularly compromised: cliff landslides, cyclonic swell, partial closures. In March 2006, a 35,000 m³ landslide killed three people and closed the road for a month. In February 2025, Cyclone Garance cut off roads and bridges across the entire island. In this context, time-critical medical transport that depends on the road takes on a structural risk.

      Operational Reliability

80 km of road exposed to disruptions versus 45 km on a direct aerial line. The drone takes off at a predefined time, flies a programmed corridor and lands at a known time, independent of traffic, lane reversals or a weather event. The receiving physician prepares the procedure during the flight, not after arrival. In a transplant, this predictability directly determines the chances of success.

      Integrity of Transported Loads

Temperature, vibrations, timestamping: transport conditions are monitored and recorded throughout the entire journey. Every transfer is documented, auditable, verifiable. The drone flies at low altitude in a straight line, without any of the cold chain breaks associated with the handling involved in conventional road transport, whether for organs, blood units or samples.

      Economic Impact

A dedicated 24/7 inter-hospital courier represents a structural fixed cost: vehicle, fuel, permanent availability, insurance. A drone is an infrastructure that can be shared across the three hubs of the CHU Réunion. An organ that is no longer viable on arrival means a cancelled transplant. Irreversible. The drone is a direct operational safeguard against this risk. When the Route du Littoral gives way, and it gives way 64 days a year, the drone is the only reliable alternative to guarantee a controlled transport time.

      A direct aerial line.
Whether the road is open or not.
The deadline is guaranteed: the organ arrives viable.
